Richard Rumelt shares the notion of the Strategic Kernel comprising: diagnosis, guiding policy, and set of coherent actions. I really like this idea as it focuses on the finding the challenge and how you grapple with it. Something so often missing from strategies I come across.
I am also struck by how congruent his ideas are with Simon Wardley‘s. As I was reading Rumelt about ‘guiding policy’ I kept hearing echoes of Simons talks and writing. They have a slightly different focus: Rumelt concentrates on the challenge while I would say Simon’s has a greater focus on situational awareness. But within Rumelt’s guiding policy I see Simon’s doctrine & leadership and I would extend the kernel to include purpose, landscape, and climate as Simon does.
That two people whose thought I respect converge on similar ideas is a signal that I am on to something worthwhile.
