The key ingredients for a successful internet startup are a great team, a big vision, and a clear technology strategy.
As an investor you are probably very finely attuned to issues with team setup and whether the vision is attractive and challenging but will they be able to deliver that vision as a product or a service?
This is where we come in.
Startups are often based on largely unverified assumptions and a CEO’s strong ideas about what the product should be. There’s nothing wrong with this, it’s in the nature of things.
But we know that most startups fail and very often it’s not just bad luck. Some of those assumptions should have been better challenged, the strategy more clearly articulated.
As an investor you need to be able to understand if an opportunity is right for you and if you are really investing in an enterprise that will make a “dent in the universe”. Conversely you need to know when to walk away from companies that are not on a vector for success.
We believe that there are four questions, quite innocuous looking but very revealing, that any company seeking investment should be in a position to answer:
- Can we articulate a clear and coherent strategy?
- Do we have a business model (or models) that appear to generate growth and revenue?
- Is our value proposition compelling for a significant customer segment?
- Do we have a strategic plan to deliver the right product/service to customers?
It is with investors in mind that we have adapted our “standard” 2-day discovery workshop a 1+1 days quick feedback to existing or potential investor by the end of day 1 (explor the strategy, vision, and business model)dive in the product design s and impact map sketching an optional day.
