Today I was at the School for Social Entrepreneurs giving a half-day workshop I titled Entrepreneur Kickstarter.
Given that I’m still carrying a cough I was a little afraid that my voice wouldn’t hold up but fortunately, if croakily, I made it through. We had 9 entrepreneurs in attendance coming from a wide range of backgrounds and ideas and I covered the basics of strategy: purpose, vision, values, functional areas, and using strategic questions and the 8-box SWOT model to develop strategies in each functional area. Then we delved into the Business Model Canvas, Value Proposition Design, and Impact Mapping as a set of linked tools for executing strategy. There were some interesting discussions along the way and I hope that everyone found it useful. In the time we had it wasn’t possible to cover these topics in depth, but hopefully I was able to offer enough insight into why they are valuable, the basic principles of how to apply them, and motivate the entrepreneurs to find out more.
Overall I enjoyed the experience very much as I hope the entrepreneurs who came did.
